Brenton worked with the Custody Notification Service for several years on a casual basis, whilst simultaneously occupying senior legal roles in government and/or academia.

He conducted welfare checks on persons in custody and provided legal advice regarding police investigative actions (e.g., forensic and non-forensic procedures, exceptions to the right to silence, and legality of search warrants) and negotiated police bail with police officers.
